As Tunisia celebrates a historic democratic election, its emerging political parties have learned that overcoming decades of authoritarian rule requires starting small, and slowly building trust. This summer we followed one of Tunisia’s emerging political parties – Afek Tounes – as it journeyed into the city that sparked the Arab Spring, and learned this lesson first-hand. Created in collaboration with Jonathan Schienberg and Rabiî Kalboussi.
Tunisia’s Emerging Information Society
From streetsweepers to rappers to activist bloggers my TunisiaLive colleague Asma Ghribi and I hit the streets of Tunis to get peoples’ perspectives on Tunisia’s new information freedoms.
An Inside Look Into Ben Ali’s Trial
On Monday I joined the TunisiaLive team for an inside look at the trial of deposed Tunisian President Ben Ali, whose 23-year authoritarian rule came to an end on January 14. As both a correspondent and as a Tunisian citizen I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to tell a story about this remarkable day.
Profiles in Passion: Interviews Across America
This summer, while driving from Pennsylvania to California, I spent some time searching for people who have taken a risk to turn a passion into a career. From an export merchant turned baker in Chicago, to an electrical engineer turned pastor in Tulsa, I found stories that changed my perspective on both the benefits – and challenges – of entrusting in a motto I’ve long held dear, “behind every passion lies a business model.”
In a recent survey conducted by Manpower International, five out of six Americans intend to seek a new job in the coming year. If you are among those who’d like your new job to be rooted in a deep passion of yours, I hope the candid perspectives captured in this mini documentary may help you to make a more informed – and inspired – choice.

StoryCard: Interview Horror Stories
Have a friend or family member who’s nervous about an interview? I’ve got just the video.
A video StoryCard for a laugh and perspective. Shot mostly in Union Square, New York City. Thanks to Pieter Heineken and Jared Lander for help and support, as well as the kind folks who contributed their stories.
A Walk Through Buffalo New York
On June 2nd I walked the streets of Buffalo New York armed with a camera and a question: what are the values that will make people want to pack up their bags and move to Buffalo New York today?
As I knocked on doors and interviewed strangers across the city, I found a complex story about crime, nepotism, charity, a strong sense of community, and entrepreneurs who are breathing new life into the economy.
For a glimpse into Buffalo, and perhaps by extension the many cities in America’s “rust belt” that are finding their footing in a new global economy, I offer “Buffalo Walk.”
My First 400 Miles
I’m writing this from Buffalo New York, on the other end of a 400 mile drive. I traveled through beautiful countryside this morning, took a run in a Buffalo park this evening, and set up a new feature so that I can upload snapshots directly to my blog (see “Photo,” above).
Tomorrow I hit the city with Charlotte of The Buffalo Story Project. Here we go.
