One of the coolest things I’ve done thus far in London is attend the peace demonstrations, both of which were among the largest demonstrations in history. It’s really refreshing to be in a country where there is a (somewhat) intelligent public discourse. On television, in print, and on the streets, you see a much more engaged, much better articulated debate than you would in the States. The bane of my existence are American shows like Crossfire on which each guest is given about a minute to voice their opinion, usually over a barrage of interjections and insults from the other guests, with little opportunity for a response. As a result, this dumbs down the debate, and a complicated question like, “hey, what are the implications of a war in Iraq?” never truly gets answered. In England they seem to care much more about hearing each other out and, as one of my professors told me, “unlike in America, the English genuinely appreciate a nonconformist point of view.” Anyhow, for now, if you’d like to get an idea of what it’s like to protest through central London in the company of about a million people, navigate to the “snapshots” subdirectory and have yourself a gander.
